Public Health Degree Programs Available from the Claremont Graduate University

Students who want to study public health at the Claremont Graduate University can choose from programs offered by the School of Community & Global Health. One of the largest of those programs will award graduates a Master of Public Health (MPH). It includes 48 units of classes such as Emerging Chronic and Infectious Diseases Worldwide, Applied Geospatial Epidemiology, Ethics, Human Rights and Cultural Diversity and Campaigning and Community Organizing for Public Health.
The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) includes opportunities for students to gain leadership experience and learn the fundamentals of public health practice. Students spend between four and five years to complete the program, which features 72 units of classes. DrPH majors spend several semesters doing practicum work and have the option of doing their fieldwork anywhere in California or another state. Some of the courses they take will include Foundations of Program Planning, Global Health Evaluation, and Applied Research, Teaching Practice and Demonstration and Health Economics and Financing.
Two dual degree programs are available from the university too. One is a combined program in applied psychology and public health. It looks at how applied psychology affects the public health field. Students can intern and work in the public health departments located in major cities around the campus and get credit for their experiences. It takes up to 3.5 years to complete the 76 units required in both programs. Students can also finish in 2.5 years. They’ll take courses such as Health Behavior Program Development, Applied Developmental Psychology, Foundations of Program Planning and Foundations of Global Health. Available concentrations include applied biostatistics and epidemiology, health behavior research and evaluation and health promotion, education and evaluation.
Also available is a program that combines an MPH with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Students learn about health care marketing and how to promote a medical facility. It takes three years to complete the requirements of both programs. Students need to pick from concentrations in global management, marketing, strategy, leadership, finance, or leadership and management. The university encourages students to pick the concentrations that apply to their career goals. Students can also earn a foundation in public health certificate.
About the Claremont Graduate University
The Claremont Graduate University is a private university that offers only graduate and doctoral degree programs as well as a small number of certificate programs for post-bachelor students. It belongs to the Claremont College System, which includes five schools that offer undergraduate programs and two schools designed for advanced students. Also called CGU, it was the third campus established in that system and originally used the name Claremont College University. It became the Claremont Graduate School and University Center in 1962, the Claremont University System in 1967 and finally CGU in 1998.
CGU now offers classes and programs through seven schools and centers and eight institutes. The Getty Leadership Institute offers programs designed for students who want to work in nonprofit centers and museums. CNN named Claremont one of the five best places to live in the United States. The campus is close to health departments and other employers that offer opportunities for CGU students.
Claremont Graduate University Accreditation Details
All public health programs at CGU have accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), including the dual programs that may have accreditation from another organization such as the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The main accreditation held by CGU comes from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is the regional accreditation required for students to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get a financial aid package. WASC accreditation also gives students the chance to earn credits from another college and transfer their classes to CGU.
Claremont Graduate University Application Requirements
The MPH program has a priority deadline of November first and a final deadline of January sixth for all applications. Students applying to start in the spring or summer must meet other deadlines. The university only accepts applications submitted through the SOPHAS site and requires that students pay a $135 application fee. They must also provide college transcripts to show that they took prerequisite courses and that they have a bachelor’s degree. Other requirements include a resume, statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation and an official GRE score. CGU will not accept test scores that are more than five years old. Their recommendation letters can come from former or current professors as well as professional references.
Students must follow the same application deadlines when applying to the doctoral public health program. They will apply through the SOPHAS website and pay a $135 fee. The university requires both undergraduate and graduate transcripts to make sure that students have the degrees and experience needed to begin the program. They will also submit three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a GRE score. CGU requires a personal statement of two to three pages that explains why the university should accept the student. The dual programs ask that students meet the requirements of each program. Students usually need to submit one copy of each record to each department.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students in the MPH program take 48 units of classes and pay $1,980 per unit. They also pay a $125 technology fee and a $245 service fee each semester. Doctoral students pay the same fees and tuition rates. Students enrolled in a dual degree program pay the same rate for their public health classes and a separate rate for courses they take from another program. CGU offers housing for students who want to live on-campus. They pay $8,000 each year for housing, which does not include their food costs.
CGU offers three fellowships that students can apply for in a graduate or doctoral program. The fellowships available from the department award funds to students who take a minimum of 12 units each semester. Trustee fellowships are available for those taking only 18 units. The Yellow Ribbon program awards funds to military students and veterans who meet certain requirements. Students also qualify for work-study and federal direct loans from the government when they file the FAFSA.
