Public Health Programs at Ohio Northern University

The public health programs that are available at Ohio Northern University include a public health major for undergrads. This is one of the only undergraduate programs in this subject in the entire state. Majors can study abroad with their professors in different locations every year, including the Dominican Republic and Ireland. During the Dominican Republic trip, students will do mission work and help children and others with their health care needs to gain practical experience with patients. They’ll also work with their professors on research projects as part of their senior capstones. The university asks them to present their capstones at the end of the term.
In the undergraduate public health program, students complete a curriculum that allows them to study major topics in this field, including health research and epidemiology. Students take classes that introduce them to college and show them how to use educational software in the first semester. They can take public health classes in the second semester as they also take Introduction to Data Science. Principles and Concepts of Human Biology, Introduction to Public Health, Issues in Preventative Medicine, Introduction to Health Policy and Sociology of Health and Health Care are some of the other courses in the public health program.
Another option for undergrads is the university’s medical humanities program, which looks at the treatment of patients. Students take social science, health, communication and religion courses in this program. They look at how patients feel about medical professionals and treatment options and what they can do to help patients. In a course called Integrative Portfolio in Medical Humanities, students can put together a portfolio that highlights the past work that they did. Other courses that majors can take include Perspectives in Medical Humanities, Ethics, Laws and Justice and Literature and Medicine.
Also available is a pharmacy graduate program that can prepare students for helping patients understand the medicine and treatments that they get. This is a direct entry program that allows students to take pharmacy classes as soon as they enter the university. They can work with the Drug and Health Information Center and volunteer with other organizations while in the program. More than 70% of the university’s students received their first choice for their residency placements later. Students typically spend five to six years in the program before doing a residency. They can join organizations that include Kappa Epsilon, Rho Chi and Phi Lambda Sigma too.
About Ohio Northern University
Ohio Northern University is a private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Henry Solomon Lehr opened a small school in Ada, Ohio in 1871 that he called the Northwestern Ohio Normal School. It became the Ohio Normal University after adding engineering, business and other programs to its curriculum. That would lead to it becoming affiliated with the United Methodist Church at the end of the century and adopting the Ohio Northern University name a few years later. Now known as ONU, it became a part of the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s and invited Martin Luther King, Jr. to speak on-campus. A statue of the man was unveiled in 2018. ONU now offers majors and programs through five colleges and has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students.
Ohio Northern University Accreditation Details
Students attending ONU can apply for financial aid and use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) because ONU has regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Those in the pharmacy program will find that the university has accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). ACPE covers all the practical fieldwork that pharmacy majors do and the courses that they take too.
Ohio Northern University Application Requirements
ONU accepts around 66% of the undergrads who apply every year. The university has a page where prospective students can hear from current students about why they chose ONU and the experiences they had on the campus. They can also check out the university’s Instagram page to see photos of students in their classes, some of the clubs they can join and all the campus buildings. Those accepted can make an enrollment deposit and sign up for summer courses or on-campus housing. Students can use the College Credit Plus Application, Common Application or University Application. They also need to provide an official test score and high school transcript.
Students applying to the pharmacy program can use the University Application or the Common Application. They need to submit an ACT/SAT score, high school transcript and a letter of recommendation. ONU will base its decision on the strength of the essay on the student’s application, the volunteer work and professional experiences they have, what interests they have outside of school and their test scores. The university interview students in the late winter and early spring before making its final decision. Students can also transfer to ONU if they provide transcripts that show they took prerequisites that include chemistry, physics, speech, and humanities courses. Students should also score highly in those classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At ONU, students pay a full-time tuition rate of $33,470 per year in most programs, including the public health and medical humanities programs. In the pharmacy program, majors pay $39,570 a year. Students pay an extra $970 in miscellaneous fees every year too. ONU offers room and board packages that include a double room and 19 meals a week for as little as $11,900 a year. Students pay more to live in a single room or one of the newer residence halls. There are different options available for upperclassmen. Part-time students pay $890 per credit hour for their classes.
Though ONU is a private university, it offers financial aid packages for students regardless of how much money their families make. It uses the FAFSA to determine how much need the student has and the application that it receives to give the student aid based on his or her merit. This can include a presidential scholarship or other awards. The top scholarships go to those with the highest grade point averages and test scores. Many students will qualify for government aid too, including loans, work-study, and grants.
