Earning a Public Health Degree at Rutgers University

Rutgers University offers its degrees in public health and related areas from its School of Public Health. The school features four departments that include those of Environmental & Occupational Health, Urban-Global Public Health, Biostatistics & Epidemiology, and Health Behavior, Society & Policy. The School of Public Health is notable as the only accredited graduate school of public health in the State of New Jersey.

Within the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health, students can pursue a Master of Public Health in Occupational Health Science or a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences. The university also offers post-baccalaureate certificates within the department that include those in population health, applied biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, or dental public health. Further certificates are available in environmental & occupational health, global public health, or health education.

From the Department of Health Behavior, Society & Policy, degrees include the Master of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences, the Master of Public Health in Health Systems & Policy, and the Doctor of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences. Additional degrees include the Master of Science in Health Outcomes, Policy & Economics, a Ph.D. in Social and Behavioral Health Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Health Systems & Policy.

For students who choose to study within the Department of Biostatistics & Epidemiology, options include Master of Public Health programs in biostatistics and epidemiology. Students may also enroll in Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy programs in these areas. Meanwhile, students who choose the route of global public health can enroll in Master of Public Health degrees in the areas of urban public health, global public health, public health nutrition, dental public health, urban health administration, or LGBTQ health.

Some of the core courses in public health that students will take include Principles & Methods of Epidemiology, Introduction to Environmental Health, Social & Behavioral Health Sciences in Public Health, and Health Systems & Policy. Additional classes students may take include Advanced Theory of Biostatistics, Lifetime Data Analysis, Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis, and Biocomputing. Each area of concentration for the university’s public health degrees also features concentration-specific classes.

About Rutgers University

Rutgers University is the largest institution of higher learning in the State of New Jersey. The university began its existence as Queen’s College in 1766 and was founded before the official formation of the United States. Although the university started out as a private liberal arts institution, it would eventually transform into a public university. Today, around 68,000 students attend the university, which has three campuses in the state.

The university is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university and is also classified as a research university. The university is considered a Public Ivy, which places the quality of its programs on the level of Ivy League schools like Harvard and Yale. The university’s official color is scarlet, and the university has three separate sports teams that play at each campus called the Scarlet Knights, Scarlet Raiders, and Scarlet Raptors.

Rutgers University Accreditation Details

Rutgers University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and it’s also a member of a handful of research and institutional organizations. The university was first accredited in 1921. Memberships include those with the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Universities Research Association, and the Association of American Universities. Many of the school’s programs are also accredited by various agencies.

Programmatic accreditations include those from the Council on Education for Public Health, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. Other organizations that have accredited programs include the Teacher Education Accreditation Council, the National Association of Schools of Dance, and the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Rutgers University Application Requirements

When students apply to Rutgers University, they will choose one of the university’s three campuses with an application to the Camden, Newark, or New Brunswick location. Students are directed to the application standards that correspond with their status as a first-year, international, transfer, or part-time applicant. Students must create an account with Rutgers to begin the application process, which will start with filling out the undergraduate application.

Prospective students must also pay an application fee and create a Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) if they’re a high school senior. Applicants may also need to submit an application for the school they want to attend. Once admitted to the university, students must accept their offer of admission, as well as check their Rutgers account to make sure the university doesn’t require any additional materials.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Rutgers University charges tuition based on the residency status of the student. For New Jersey residents, the rate for tuition is $12,230 for the year. Fees add an additional $3,177 per year, and students who live on campus will pay another $13,075. In all, commuting students from New Jersey can expect to pay $15,407 per year, and students living on campus can expect to pay $28,482 per year.

For non-residents of New Jersey, the rate for tuition is $29,012 per year, with the same amounts paid as residents for fees, room, and board. For graduate students, tuition is based on the campus a student attends and is charged on a per-credit basis. For example, students attending the New Brunswick campus will pay $718 per credit if they’re a resident of New Jersey or $1,221 if they’re from outside the state.

The Office of Financial Aid handles financial aid applications for Rutgers University. To gain eligibility for a variety of financial aid programs, students must submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The university indicates that it offers scholarships, grants, and student employment opportunities to help students pay for school.

Each year, the university awards more than $670 million in financial aid to its undergraduate students, and more than 77 percent of students receive some type of aid. Students may want to apply for scholarships when they submit their financial aid application. Available scholarships include the Rutgers-Eagleton Washington Internship Award and the RU September 11th Memorial Scholarship. The average undergraduate student who attends Rutgers University will receive an aid package of $16,621 for the year.
