Four SIUC Degrees for Public Health Practice

At Pulliam Hall, the School of Health Sciences has a 120-credit, four-year BS in Public Health for Southern Illinois University Carbondale Salukis with minimum 2.75 GPAs to take courses like Human Physiology, pledge Eta Sigma Gamma, and complete 200+ practicum hours for CHES certification. Chaired by Dr. Robert McDermott, the Master of Public Health builds a 42-credit, CEPH-accredited curriculum with a built-in Community Health Education specialization and two 200-hour internships, such as the Prairie Heart Institute or Palos Health. Each Fall, the MS in Community Nutrition starts a 39-credit, ACEND-accredited path toward a 1,200-hour Dietetic Internship with Unity Point, St. John’s Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, and others for a 90 percent RDN licensure rate. Advised by Dr. Mallory Gary, the Ph.D. in Health Education follows a 61-credit, post-master’s plan with seminars, research labs like the Center for Environmental Health, qualifying exams, and teaching practicum. There’s also a Joint MD/MPH.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale originated on March 9, 1869, when the 26th General Assembly passed legislation to create the Southern Illinois Normal College for teachers. In 1874, President Robert Allyn welcomed an inaugural class of 51 to Old Main. In 1876, Southern Illinois enrolled the first African-American student, Alexander Lane. In 1920, Southern Illinois opened the first Health Services Center in Davies Gymnasium. In 1943, it became Southern Illinois Normal University as graduate degrees grew. In 1948, the Southern Illinois University name was adopted by President Delyte Morris. In 1951, SIUC established America’s earliest camp for disabled people at Touch of Nature Environmental Center. In 1997, Senator Paul Simon founded the Public Policy Institute at SIUC.

Southern Illinois University Accreditation Details
On February 17, 2020, Southern Illinois University Carbondale underwent a comprehensive evaluation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) to continue its Level VI accreditation status through the next 2029-30 cycle under Chancellor John M.Dunn, Ph.D., who received the NAKPEHE Distinguished Scholar Award. Located 332 miles up Interstate 57 in Chicago, this huge 19-state Heartland Region accreditor is authorized by the U.S. Education Department to review SIUC’s three associate, 100 bachelor’s, 80 master’s, and 37 doctoral degrees. Further, the Department of Public Health & Recreation Professions was accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) on June 18, 2011. The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) also approved Southern Illinois in September 2019.
Southern Illinois University Application Requirements
Enrollment at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is classified as “moderately difficult” by Peterson’s since 3,569 of the 5,377 Fall 2018 applicants were chosen for 66 percent admission. First-year Salukis seeking the BS in Public Health must fulfill the high school course pattern or earn the GED equivalent. Freshmen in the top 10 percent of their graduating classes are automatically accepted. The Class of 2022 reported an average 3.24 GPA. Mid-range admitted SAT scores are 440-640 for reading and 480-690 for math. The middle 50th percentile had ACT scores of 20-26. As of Fall 2020, SIUC has a test-optional process for undergrads with minimum 2.75 GPAs. Department of Public Health & Recreation Professions transfers need 26+ accredited credits and GPAs over 2.75. Public Health 101 and Allied Health 241 are prerequisite courses. International students need at least 520 TOEFL pBT, 4.0 ITEP, or 6.0 IELTS scores. The Graduate School requires four-year bachelor’s completion with a 3.0 or better GPA. Ph.D. in Health Education cohorts must achieve 3.25 master’s GPAs. Joint MD/MPH students also report a median 506 MCAT score.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale suggests BS in Public Health majors apply by the May 1st priority deadline. Undergraduate admission is rolling through August 1st in Fall and December 1st in Spring though. The Master of Public Health considers candidates until March 7th. The MS in Community Nutrition closes on February 15th. Prospective Ph.D. in Health Education cohorts must file before February 28th. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2020-21, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is billing new full-time BS in Public Health majors $9,638 annually. The Legacy Tuition Rate will be $7,710 each year. Mandatory undergrad fees will be $5,266 by year. Residing at the Jackson County campus’ dorms like Kellogg Hall will add $10,622 for room and board. SIUC budgets $1,100 for books and $2,941 for living expenses. Annual bachelor’s attendance will equal $29,567 on-site and $20,945 if commuting. The Graduate School is charging Illinoisans $14,085 and non-residents $35,213 each year full-time. Required post-grad fees will be $5,260 combined. On-campus master’s and doctoral studies range from $37,658 to $58,786 yearly. Online graduate courses will be priced $469 per credit.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office in Student Services Building Room 211 connects 93 percent of new full-time SUIC Salukis to tuition assistance averaging $11,738 each for $14.09 million total. School of Health Sciences funds include the Alex & Mary Vitello Scholarship, Arthur Horne Student Scholarship, Donald Boydston Graduate Scholarship, Heartful Health Scholarship, Girmay Tesfay Graduate Scholarship, Harold & Lana Bardo Scholarship, John Lewis Memorial Scholarship, Shirley McGlinn Scholarship, W.G. Robinson-McNeese Scholarship, Poshard Foundation Scholarship, and Bessie Engram Community Service Award. The University Excellence Scholarship presents $9,500 annually to outstanding freshmen with a minimum 1310 SAT or 28 ACT score. The $3,000 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship has a March 1st deadline for BS in Public Health transfers with GPAs above 3.50. Federal resources, such as the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or Graduate Plus Loan, require FAFSA applications coded 001758. Illinoisans also pursue the Monetary Award Program, National Guard Grant, Grant for Dependents of Correctional Officers, General Assembly Legislative Scholarship, IPHA Graduate Scholarship, and more.
