In Caroline Richardson Hall, the School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine grants a 120-credit B.S. in Public Health led by Dr. Joseph Keating for Tulane University undergrads to learn community wellness methods with a China Summer Semester and Delta Omega membership.
Chaired by Dr. Tonette Krousel-Wood, the Master of Public Health builds a 45-credit, CEPH-accredited degree in nine areas: Disaster Management, Epidemiology, Health Education, Health Policy, Community Health Sciences, Health Systems Management, International Health, Maternal & Child Health, and Nutrition. The Master of Public Health & Tropical Medicine has a 42-credit curriculum overseen by Dr. Preston Marx for ASTMH certification after 300-hour practicum placements, such as Eden House, The Gorgas Institute, or Ochsner Center. Directed by Dr. Thomas LaVeist, the M.S. in Public Health customizes a 42-credit New Orleans degree in Biostatistics, Clinical Investigation, or Epidemiology with more research in cutting-edge Tulane centers like the Violence Prevention Institute.
Ranked 12th by the U.S. News & World Report, the Ph.D. in Public Health follows a 72-credit dissertation sequence under Dr. LuAnn White for Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Global Community Health, Global Environmental Health Sciences, Global Health Management & Policy, or Tropical Medicine.
About Tulane University
Tulane University originated in 1834 when seven doctors started the Medical College of Louisiana as the South’s second-ever medical school to fight smallpox and cholera. In 1847, the Legislature chartered it officially as the University of Louisiana. In 1853, it faced a yellow fever epidemic that claimed over 7,800 New Orleans lives. In 1884, Act 43 transferred its ownership to the Tulane Educational Fund formed by successful retailer Paul Tulane.

Tulane University Accreditation Details
On April 24, 2012, Tulane University announced that it aced the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College’s (SACSCOC) lengthy review with a 504-page report to extend Level VI accreditation through 2021 under its 15th president, Dr. Michael Fitts, who earned the Urban Institute’s Leadership Award. Headquartered 478 miles northeast via Interstate 65 in Decatur, this great 11-state Gulf Coast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to test Tulane’s 10 schools.
Particularly, the School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine was recently reaffirmed by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) through July 1, 2025. The Dual MD-MPH Program was evaluated by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in Fall 2017. Dual MSW-MPH courses were approved by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in February 2012.
Tulane University Application Requirements
Starting at Tulane University is classified “very difficult” by Peterson’s because only 7,657 of the 35,622 Fall 2017 applicants were triumphant for 21 percent acceptance. First-year Green Waves entering the Times Higher Education’s 56th best college must finish an accredited high school or homeschool program. Guaranteed admission requires a Core GPA of 3.6 or better. This must include four English, three Social Studies, three Science, and three Math units. Freshmen are guaranteed spots with 31 ACT and 1450 SAT scores or higher. Declaring the B.S. in Public Health requires junior-level status with 60+ credits graded at least “C” though. The average transfer GPA is currently 3.40 on the four-point scale.
The School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine seeks MPH and MSPH cohorts with fully accredited bachelor’s majors. Master’s cohorts need minimum 3.0 cumulative GPAs. Global candidates prove English fluency with an 89 TOEFL iBT or 6.5 IELTS score. Composite GRE scores of 305 or greater are ideal. Doctoral students should finish an MPH or equivalent above the 3.5 GPA benchmark.
Tulane University has freshman deadlines of November 1st for Early Decision, January 15th for Early Action, and April 1st for Regular Decision. Junior B.S. in Public Health transfers have until April 15th for Fall or October 15th for Spring entrance. It’s suggested international students complete the CSS Profile by February 15th. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, Tulane University will charge full-time B.S. in Public Health majors $28,400 each semester or $56,800 annually. This includes the $2,800 support fee, $640 health fee, and $600 activity fee. Living at the New Orleans campus’ dorms like Monroe Hall will add $9,010 for yearly rent. Typical meal plans for Bruff Commons Dining Room will be $6,764 extra. Tulane budgets $1,200 for textbooks and $1,086 for miscellaneous.
