Master of Public Health – Biostatistics Concentration

The University of Memphis offers a Master of Public Health with a Biostatics Concentration that prepares future leaders for careers focused on biostatistics based on public health. The program requires 42 credit hours which include three hours of field experience and three hours of a thesis or master’s project seminar. Students learn in an environment that is conducive to interdisciplinary health initiatives with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. Courses required include:

  • Applied Categorical Data Analysis
  • Applied Survey Analysis in Public Health
  • Biostatistical Methods I & II
  • Environmental Health I
  • Epidemiology in Public Health
  • Foundations of Public Health
  • Health Policy and Organizational Health Services

Eighteen hours of electives are also required and all electives must receive approval of the faculty adviser.

Master of Public Health – Environmental Health Concentration

The Master of Public Health with an Environmental Health Concentration is designed for those who wish to pursue careers related to public health but with an environmental focus. The program requires 42 credit hours that include three hours of field experience as well as three hours preparing for a thesis or master’s project seminar. Courses required for the program include:

Master of Public Health – Epidemiology Concentration

The University of Memphis offers a Master of Public Health with an epidemiology concentration which is designed for those who want to learn more about the incidence, distribution, and control of diseases as they relate to public health. Courses required for the degree include:

Master of Public Health – Health Systems and Policy Concentration

In order to complete the degree, students must also complete 18 credit hours in electives that must be approved by an adviser.  The MPH at UM is offered conveniently in an online format and students can also take evening courses.

About the University of Memphis

In 1909, the General Education Bill was enacted by the Tennessee Legislature. It was this act that created the West Tennessee Normal School with a mission to educate teachers. The name of the school changed to the West Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925 and became Memphis State college in 1946. The school gained university status in 1957 and became the University of Memphis in 1994.

University of Memphis Application Requirements

Students who wish to enter the Master of Public Health program in any concentration must have adequate preparation in the sciences. They must have completed at least one college-level course in biology, mathematics and social science. It is also strongly recommended that those who wish to apply to the program have completed anatomy, physiology, nutrition, chemistry, physics, and statistics, although it is not required. All applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and must submit official GRE scores earned within the past five years. In addition, applicants must have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or a graduate cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Three letters of recommendation are required from people who are familiar with the applicant’s academic background or public health experience. A statement of purpose of between 400 and 500 words that indicates the applicant’s interests and career goals is also required.

The University of Memphis Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for Tennessee residents is $434 per credit hour while non-residents pay $594 per credit hour if they attend on campus. Online courses are $420 per credit hour for Tennessee residents and $580 for non-residents for undergraduate courses. Graduate tuition for residents is $609 per credit hour and $801 per credit hour for non-residents for campus courses. Online tuition is $603 per credit hour for residents and $795 for non-residents for graduate courses.

Financial aid is available and students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for any financial assistance. The FAFSA must be renewed each year in order to continue receiving assistance. Financial aid may be in the form of scholarships, grants or work-study programs. Students may also be offered loans which must be repaid after graduation.
